WHO WE ARE

We are the womb carriers, sisters, mothers, and grandmothers who have been given a sacred responsibility to protect the water, land and all life for the generations to come. We are leading this water walk to uphold the Laws of Nature and call people into awareness regarding this grave threat to our communities.

Our symbol is the blue heron, a sacred water bird of these lands that reminds us of our right to self-determination and how to live in balance – guided by thoughtful, deliberate action. People of all faiths and traditions are invited to walk and join our collective prayer for the water and for all life.

Abuela Kunana

Mona Polacca

Grandmother Mona Polacca, a Hopi/Havasupai/Tewa elder, and is one of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, an extraordinary group of elders from around the world sharing prayers for healing and peace.

Clara Soaring Hawk

Clara Soaring Hawk is an elder of the Ramapough Lenape Nation, where she formerly served as Chief and now continues her service as an Ambassador. She is a respected spiritual advisor, public speaker, artist, activist, and teacher, sharing the traditional ways of her people.

Cheryl Angel

Cheryl Angel is an indigenous leader, wise (Sioux) Lakota elder woman, and lifelong devoted water protector who helped initiate and maintain the Standing Rock camp since April 2016. Her voice among the water protectors is one of integrating deep prayer with nonviolent direct action.

Nancy Andry

Grandmother Nancy is of Algonquin and French heritage and has followed the Red Road since childhood. A Sundancer and a Sacred Pipe carrier, she is acknowledged as an elder and a grandmother in her communities in Canada, where she was given instruction to bring out and share certain teachings. Grandmother Nancy is a well-known storyteller, sharing legends from many different Nations in schools, health facilities and the pow wow circuit.

Margaret Behan

Grandmother Red Spider Woman, Margaret Behan Cheyenne - Arapaho lives in Calumet Oklahoma. “Our creation story comes from the water, so as an Elder woman it is important for me to be present at the Women's Water Walk.”

Sandra Deer-Standup

Sandra Owén:nakon Deer-Standup is a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) from Kahnawa:ke (By The Rapids). She has been involved in land defense and political activism for sovereign rights for her people since she was 6 years old. She has been an educational administrator, curriculum writer and consultant; has published several published academic papers; and is currently writing her doctoral dissertation in education at McGill University.

As an helper, an activist and grassroots organizer, Dennis leads COPAL—Cultivating Opportunity, Peace, and Leadership.

Austin Nunez

Austin G. Nunez is the elected chairman of the San Xavier District, of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Austin is the current chairman for the Indian Land Working Group, an organization dedicated to the restoration and recovery of the native land base; and the control, use, and management of this land base by indigenous communities.

Rudy Lazzaro is an artist of Bolivian Quechua descent, born at the foot of the Andes in Argentina. His work is a reflection of his passion, prayer, and a deep respect for ancestral wisdom, making his work not just art, but a living prayer.

Steven "Owl" Smith

is an indigenous leader, activist, and deer clan member of the Ramapough Lenape (Ramapo Munsee) Nation. He is prominent in environmental and cultural preservation, frequently representing his nation in discussions on the "Rights of Nature" and traditional ecological stewardship.

Jimmy Sumner, is a Middleburgh resident, retired police officer and former WUA board member. Jimmy was so inspired by the work of the organization that he donated 7 acres of land with a hunting camp on it to the Waterfall Unity Alliance - an inspiring story of local community coming together to welcome the original inhabitants back to the land.
